Songkran: Chiang Mai, Thailand 2009 : Thai's celebrate their New Year with the Songkran festival. Originally, this involved sprinkling a small amount of water on one's elders as a token of respect but these days you're more likely to be confronted with buckets and a collection of high powered water guns as everyone joins in up to five days of massive water fights. Although it's hard to go out anywhere during the hours of daylight and get to your destination without getting soaked, most of the pictures in this gallery were taken around the moat which surrounds Chiang Mai's Old City and the "victims" knew exactly what to expect! This festival is now becoming world famous with many tourists coming to experience what is often billed as "the world's biggest water fight". Most surprising to me was the number of parents taking very young children into the mayhem on the front of a motorbike.

Honda Race Day : Not content with a car racing event on a grand scale last May, Honda held a bike racing event in the centre of Chiang Mai on December 20th. Groups of racing wanabees trashed tuned up Honda road bikes around a short track near Canal Road and a couple of pros treated the small crowd to something a bit more adventurous.

Global House Fire : November 6th 2008: GLOBAL HOUSE DESTROYED BY FIRE
The giant Home Improvement and building materials warehouse of Global House, Chiang Mai was completely destroyed by fire this morning. The blaze started about 9.00, reportedly as a result of welding during maintenance work being done on the roof and quickly spread throughout the store which was fairly empty as normal at that time of the day. Much of the material inside is highly flammable and many explosions could be heard as the fire took hold, sending a dense black column of smoke which could be seen from all over the city. Two fire fighters were injured, one seriously, when part of the burning building collapsed on their fire appliance but there were no reports of casualties amongst store staff or the public.

Loy Krathong at Sukothai 2006 : Celebrating the festival of Loy Krathong among the ancient ruins of Thailand's former capital was a wonderful experience. The highlight of each evening was setting candle floats adrift on one of the many lakes, fire balloons up into the sky and an elaborate Son et Lumiere performance.

Your Bio

I've been taking photographs since I was about six years old (Kodak Brownie 127) and progressed through medium format, 35mm and now work entirely in the digital domain using a Canon 20D and a 1D MkIII. Most of my pictures are travel and reportage with a strong bias towards portraiture.
